How Does Spider Vein Cosmetic Sclerotherapy Work?

Spider veins often get confused with varicose veins – spider veins appear smaller than 1 mm in comparison to varicose veins and only appear on the surface of the skin. While varicose veins tend to bulge out of the skin, swell, and cause pain, spider veins only appear as a simple cosmetic. In statistics, about 40 percent of women experience spider veins compared to 25 percent of their male counterparts. By addressing this issue firsthand, cosmetic sclerotherapy is the most common and best treatment out there.

Cosmetic sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure, meaning it does not require extensive surgical procedures and general anesthesia to be performed. A sclerosant solution is injected with a microscopic needle into the spider vein areas under the guidance of our physicians and radiologists. Once the medicine is injected, it causes the vein to seal itself and eventually be reabsorbed back into the body. When the veins seal shut, it impedes blood flow to those particular veins, and the blood then transfers over to healthier veins within the same area of the body. By reducing blood flow and blocking off those areas where the spider veins existed, their visibility reduces, and the veins ultimately disappear.

Am I a Candidate For Spider Vein Cosmetic Sclerotherapy?

Spider veins can occur for various reasons, and although treatment isn’t medically necessary for most patients, spider vein sclerotherapy can easily be performed for aesthetic reasons. Patients who are pregnant, have an allergic reaction to the solution or have certain conditions such as hormonal imbalances, deep vein thrombosis, and cardiovascular issues may not qualify for this treatment. However, patients who qualify for that treatment will find that this procedure has many benefits, including:

  • Little To No Down Time: Recovery from cosmetic sclerotherapy is a single day; patients can return back to their normal activities with ease. Patients may need to have more than one treatment within the next 6 to 12 weeks after the first session for fuller results.
  • Minimal Side Effects: This procedure produces very few side effects, with most side effects including itching, discolored skin, and swelling. There may also be mild bruises in the injection sites.
  • No Compression Stockings: Patients with spider veins are not required to wear compression socks after their treatment, as it is considered a cosmetic procedure and not a medical one.
  • High Success Rate: Overall, patients who chose spider vein cosmetic sclerotherapy were able to see fast, effective results within as little as a few weeks.
